You just won your state or club super-senior championship (age 65 and over), now what? When it comes to national competition, there is a huge void for the 65-and-over golfer. Unlike younger seniors or mid-amateurs who can continue to try and qualify for a US Golf Association championship, a dedicated national tournament for the 65-and over player does not exist.
In 2017, Golfweek took the lead and created a tournament opportunity for this group of players with decades of history in this game. The event – The US Super Senior, Legends, and Super Legends National Championship – joined the Golfweek Elite Senior Players Series and will be contested July 7-9, 2021 at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Georgia.
For one reason or another many elite amateur golfers who are now over the age of 65 reached a point in their life where golf was put on the back shelf. Raising a family and growing a business became their main priorities.
A perfect example of that career path would be Jay Sigel. He enjoyed one of the more illustrious careers in the history of amateur golf before turning pro at the age of 50. For him, tournament glory took a back seat to family and business but his practice habits and competitive desire never left.
“We have spent the last five years advocating for this group of talented players,” said Armand Cimaroli, Director of Events for US Today Sports / Golfweek. “We really hit a hole-in-one this year by partnering with The Golf Club of Georgia, a premier golf facility, to host this national event. A dedicated tournament for this age group offers them another shot at winning a national championship.” With that in mind, Golfweek will continue to support and crown elite Super-Senior, Legend, and Super-Legend champions from around the U.S.

Located just outside of Atlanta in Alpharetta, Georgia sits one of the premier courses in the US, the private Golf Club of Georgia. Over the years the club has hosted The PGA Tour Champions, the historic Georgia Cup which annually pit the reigning amateur champions from the United States and Great Britain prior to their participation at the Masters, and the yearly Collegiate Championship showcasing some of the most highly ranked teams from across the country. The club has also hosted the Georgia Amateur and numerous USGA qualifiers.

Players to Watch as of March 29, 2021
Randy Elliott of Winter Park, Florida is sitting at No. 1 in the Super-Senior division of the Golfweek Senior Amateur Rankings. His 2021 start has been impressive and he’s nearly impossible to beat after winning two of the three starts: The SOS Spring Classic, and the Florida Senior Azalea. His only problem is Mark Fried of Solon, Ohio who was the Golfweek Super-Senior POY in 2020 and is only 175 points behind Elliott.
The Legends division features Jim Kamis of Marietta, Georgia. No wonder! He has won three of his five starts in 2021 including: The Golfweek POY Classic, Heron Creek Senior, and The Moot Thomas Senior Invitational. Peter Van Ingen of Jupiter, Florida, a former Society of Senior POY sits at No. 2, but trailing Kamis by a whopping 1723.3 points. If Kamis continues his dominating play, the Legends division could be decided before the end of September.
No surprises in the Super-Legends division with Walt Martin of St Augustine, Florida once again leading the division. In 2020, Martin was Golfweek’ s first Super-Legend POY and is sitting on top with a 1615-poit lead over No. 2 Joe Pavoni of Prospect, Kentucky. Do not, let me say that again for more emphasis,
DO NOT count out No. 3, Charlie Busbee of Stockbridge, Georgia. He accomplished one of the most amazing feats I have ever seen. Busbee, who is 84-years old carded a first round 67 at the Moot Thomas Invitational in Ocala, Florida. Let that sink in… he posted a score that was 17 shots under his age! Hell, I would retire if I could post a score that was 17 shots OVER my age!
