AVONDALE, La. – Cameron Smith’s mullet jumped the shark a long time ago, but his Zurich Classic partner Marc Leishman is having good fun with it this week.
Leishman already had won the week with the most fitting musical selection for their team’s walk up music to the first tee picking Jay Powell’s The Mullet Song as. But he went next level, as the kids say, by pulling a mullet wig out of his bag at the first tee Saturday and sporting it for their player introduction.
That may be the funniest first-tee prop since Lee Trevino tossed a rubber snake at Jack Nicklaus before the start of their 18-hole playoff at the 1971 U.S. Open.
Leishman also had the honors of giving Smith a trim ahead of the tournament on Wednesday. As Smith, who first gained attention for his mullet/mustache combo at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, explained, he wanted to clean up the sides and was heading out for a cut when Leishman said not to bother.
“Leish said, ‘I can do it, I cut my boys’ hair at home.’ So, I put faith in him, and I think he did a pretty good job,” Smith said.

Leishman explained that with all the barbershops near his home closed during quarantine, he served as family barber for his boys when their hair became scruffy.
“I will say I was a bit nervous the first few chunks I took out, but they turned out pretty good, so I was confident I could handle the short sides for Cam,” Leishman said.
“The lines were there. I had a barber do it last year, so all Leish had to do was like a coloring in, just don’t go outside the lines. I had a pretty good template to work with,” Smith said. “It wasn’t too tough.”
Asked if he considered buzzing off his long flowing locks in the back, Leishman laughed and said, “No, no chance.”
“No,” Smith interjected, “I would have killed him.”
