The Golf Guys Tour is a fun bunch, made up of NASCAR drivers, team members and others in the NASCAR universe who call themselves the “most frustrated amateurs on tour.”

These guys not only play tournaments at really great golf courses but they keep season-long points standings, just like they do on the PGA Tour and in NASCAR.

After an extended break, the tour made its return this week at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina, with its first tournament since 2019. Bubba Wallace won the event.

Tour founder Denny Hamlin told NASCAR.com that Wallace was “just there in a fill-in role” yet won his first time out playing on the Golf Guys Tour.

Hamlin said Wallace had the best score in relation to his handicap so he took home the honors, and then, as seen in an Instragram post, drank beer out of a large trophy.

Hamlin is the Golf Guys Tour founder and commissioner — oh, he’s also a three-time Daytona 500 champ — who won the final event as well as the points title in 2019. The tour was the brainchild of his and fellow driver Ricky Stenhouse.

Hamlin drives the No. 11 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing for his real job. His other job is co-owner, along with Michael Jordan, of the Wallace NASCAR charter.

Hamlin says his golf handicap is 3.5 and he’s a true golf nut, having caddied for Bubba Watson in the Masters Par 3 Contest and having played Jordan’s exclusive golf course, Grove XXIII.

“Golf has always been a great way for me to decompress and get away from the work aspect of racing and being a race-car driver just for a few hours,” Hamlin told NASCAR.com.

Sounds like it’s now a great way for Wallace to one-up his boss, too.
