For the first time since the summer of 2019, the U.S. Junior is back – and it’s nearly doubled in size.
The 2020 championship, canceled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, would have been the first U.S. Junior conducted with an expanded field of 264 players (up from the usual 156). Two courses will now be utilized for stroke-play qualifying before the field is cut to the traditional 64 players for the start of match play. In many ways, this championship now mimics the U.S. Amateur – though that field starts with 312 players.
The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, North Carolina, hosts this week, with players getting a round on both the Dogwood and Cardinal courses to start the week. Match play will happen exclusively on the Dogwood course.
Defending champion Preston Summerhays reached his 19th birthday two days too early to compete this year, but there are plenty of names to watch in the field, including the following men:
The twins
It’s the last hurrah in junior golf for David Ford, Golfweek’s top-ranked junior, and his twin brother Maxwell. This fall, David is headed to North Carolina and Maxwell to Georgia to start college-golf careers. Between the two, the accolades have been many. They’re both fierce match-play players (David went 4-0 in this month’s AJGA Wyndham Cup) and motivated by each other.
The Mississippi kid
Two years ago, Cohen Trolio was one of the breakout stars of the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst with his run to the semifinals. In the nearly two years since, Trolio has logged top 10s in the Jones Cup, Dustin Johnson World Junior and Terra Cotta. In other words, he’s lost the element of surprise.
The local
Many eyes will be on Pinehurst local Jackson Van Paris this week. He’s a member at Country Club of North Carolina and he’s coming off a run to the final match of the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2 earlier this month.
The Junior Ryder Cuppers
By the start of next month, the six men and six women who will represent the U.S. on the Junior Ryder Cup team in September will have been finalized. Courtesy of his win at last week’s Junior PGA Championship, Caleb Surratt was the first person named to that team. Surratt, a Tennessee commit, went16 under for 72 holes to win by three. He has also won the Western Junior and Terra Cotta Invitational this year.
Bryan Lee, who finished in a three-way tie for second at the Junior PGA, later won a playoff for another spot on the team.
The veterans
Duke signee Kelly Chinn, medalist in 2018 and a semifinalist in 2019, will play his third and last U.S. Junior and Jolo Timothy Magcalayo will also make a third start.
