HARRISON, N.Y. — When asked about how she’d prepare for Sunday’s 36-hole final match at Westchester Country Club, Jensen Castle finished by saying, “Whatever has happened it’s meant to be.”
After surviving a 12-for-2 playoff just to advance from stroke play, Castle was apparently meant to be a champion. For the third time in six matches this week, the Kentucky junior came back from 2-down, this time against Arizona junior Yu-Chiang (Vivian) Hou, to win the 121st U.S. Women’s Amateur, 2 and 1.
Castle never trailed in the Round of 64, Round of 16 or the quarterfinals.
The win earns Castle a gold medal and custody of the Robert Cox Trophy for one year, a spot in the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open as well as qualifying exemptions for the next 10 U.S. Women’s Amateurs and 15 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateurs, if eligible. Castle also secured a spot on Team USA’s roster for the upcoming Curtis Cup, August 26–28 at Conwy Golf Club in Wales, joining Rose Zhang, Rachel Heck and Allisen Corpuz.
