Smiths Falls cheers as Henderson goes for gold
As Brooke Henderson competes for her second time going for gold during the Tokyo Olympics, her hometown of Smiths Falls rallies behind her.
“She is a perfect example of a great person and a great Canadian; she’ll do her best,” said Gord Percy, general manager at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club. “The whole club and the community are very proud of her still.”
Henderson is one of four golfers going for the Olympic gold for Team Canada. Tokyo is Henderson’s second time competing for gold, after tying for seventh in Rio in 2016.
Women’s individual games start Tuesday at 7:25 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, and will run for four rounds throughout the first week of August, with gold medal finals on Aug. 7.
“She has a lot of pressure on her and she just handles it so well. I think she thrives on it,” said Percy.
He continues: “It just amazes everyone that she can do what she can do and handle the pressure of being Canada’s best golfer, and one of the best golfers in the world.”
Smiths Falls is proud to support two Olympians, Henderson and Bailey Andison, who competed in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley on July 26.
Throughout the town and along Golf Club Road, residents have put up lawn signs on their properties to show support for the Olympians.
“It’s hard to believe that Smiths Falls now has two Olympians,” said Percy.
Many members at the local golf course have altered their tee time schedule this week to watch Henderson play.
“I think everybody is really anxious to see how she does; I think they have high expectations too,” said Percy, adding there are signs up throughout the club to show their support for her.
“It was always amazing, using a really big golf driver, it was almost as tall as her,” said Percy, as he reflected on Brooke Henderson’s early years at her hometown golf course.
Many members of the club would say that most people don’t realize how hard Henderson has worked for this, said Percy.
He added Henderson started golfing very early in life.
“If she wasn’t playing she was watching her dad and her sister out on the range.”
Henderson’s sister, Brittany Henderson, will be by Brooke’s side as her caddie as she competes for gold. She has previously joined Brooke at the Rio 2016 Olympics and has been her caddie for many other games throughout the years.
Percy says that the Henderson family has always been close.
“She’s very fortunate that her sister is there.”
The Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club will have the games playing on all its TVs as Henderson competes.
“Everybody will be watching some place, that’s for sure,” said Percy.
