Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix, Michigan, is a prime example of old-school cool and charm that shouldn’t be missed by any golf architecture fans looking to play a classic course that has been beautifully restored.
Built by William Watson in 1927, Belvedere had seen trees encroach into playing lines and the greens shrink over the decades. Bruce Hepner, an architect who frequently works with Tom Doak, undertook a restoration after Watson’s original plans were discovered in an old building nearby. Greens were pushed back to the original dimensions, once again engaging the mounds and slopes as intended, and trees were removed.
Now in excellent condition, Belvedere shouldn’t be skipped by the many golfers who head to Michigan each season. A member’s club that allows guests to book tee times most days, it ranks No. 9 in Michigan on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play list for public-access layouts.
