Phil Mickelson will be making one more start on the PGA Tour Champions in 2021. The World Golf Hall of Famer has committed to playing in next week’s Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club, where he’ll be trying to win his four senior title in just his sixth start on the circuit.

Mickelson is currently 26th on the Charles Schwab Cup points standings, with the top 36 players eligible to play in the final event of the 2020-21 PGA Tour Champions super season. He had previously indicated his interest in playing in the event, which takes place not far from his old college stomping grounds at Arizona State.

“To say we are excited to have Phil play the final Charles Schwab Cup Playoff event at the 2021 Charles Schwab Cup Championship is an understatement,” said Tiffany Nelson, the tournament’s executive director, in a press release. “We are thrilled to have Phil participate in one of his hometown events and feel the tremendous support from our fans, which we know will create an incredible environment for all.”

Mickelson is coming off a T-47th finish at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic two weeks ago in Richmond, Va., the worst performance so far in impressive senior career. That tournament was the first of three events that make up the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs series. Mickelson is not in the field at the second event, this week’s TimberTech Championship in Boca Raton, Fla., which won’t get started until Saturday after five inches of rain forced the postponement of the first round on Friday.

Bernhard Langer currently leads the Charles Schwab Cup points race, with Mickelson mathematically to far back to win the season-long title. But with a victory at Phoenix, Mickelson would be just the second player in PGA Tour Champions’ history to win four tournaments in his first six starts, joining Jack Nicklaus.
