PHIL MICKELSON TO PLAY IN TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS FOR FIRST TIME IN 21 YEARS

Mickelson commits to the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua in the first week of January 2022. 


Phil Mickelson to play in Tournament of Champions for first time in 21 years 
 

Phil Mickelson will tee it up in the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua for the first time in 21 years in the first week of January 2022.

Mickelson qualified for the PGA Tour season winner-only event after becoming the oldest major winner aged 50 at the 2021 US PGA Championship in May. 

Now 51, Mickelson has decided to take up his invitation for the lid lifter to a new year of golf on the PGA Tour. 

The full field for the tournament has yet to fully revealed but will be announced in the coming days.

The world's best two players Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa have confirmed their participation, however, as too have Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas.

"We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Phil Mickelson back to Kapalua, as his return adds additional star power to an incredibly deep and talented field," said Alex Urban, the event's executive director.

Mickelson won the tournament twice (1994 and 1998) back when it was played at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. 

He fended off Fred Couples in a playoff in '94 and then ousted Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara four years later.

Mickelson had won every year on the PGA Tour from 2000 and 2013 but the last time he had decided to play in the Touranment of Champions at Kapalua was back in January 2001 when he finished tied 28th.

Lefty also played there in 1999 and finished tied 22nd.
