With its leading scorer, senior Beatrice Wallin, back for the spring season after competing in LPGA Q-School in the fall, Florida State opened the spring with a victory at the Moon Golf Invitational.
A wire-to-wire victory at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Florida, gave the Seminoles significant victories over top-20 programs South Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, Virginia, Duke and Auburn at the Moon Golf. Florida State was 10 under for 54 holes despite windy conditions.
“I thought they played outstanding,” head coach Amy Bond told Golfweek. “The golf course at home is difficult but we don’t get this kind of wind so I wasn’t really sure going into this week how they were going to play. We kind of pushed them a little harder, put them under pressure, but I couldn’t be happier. I was looking at the field and I figured a top 5 would be a really good finish for us. But they came out ready to go and had a different thought in mind about winning.
“To lead wire to wire in this field, I’m extremely proud of them.”
Three Seminoles – Charlotte Heath, Beatrice Wallin and Amelia Williamson – finished in the top 10 individually. Three days after the victory, Florida State returned to Tallahassee to host its own Florida State Match-Up and finished runner-up. Williamson won the individual title.
