AUGUSTA, Ga. – Poppy and Sammy are going to have a day on Wednesday.
Both Rory McIlroy, papa of Poppy, and Jordan Spieth, daddy to Sammy, confirmed that they intend to bring their young children to the Masters Par 3 Contest on Wednesday.
“It’s funny. When you don’t have children, the Par 3 seems like a bit of an afterthought, and then once kids arrive, it sort of becomes the highlight of the week in a way,” McIlroy said of the tournament played on Augusta National’s nine-hole par-3 course with holes ranging from 70 to 140 yards. “So, yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It will be fun to get out there tomorrow and watch her run around.”
The Par 3 Contest, which dates to 1960, was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Poppy was born on Aug. 31, 2020, so this is her first opportunity to don a miniature white jumpsuit and serve as her dad’s caddie of sorts.
Samuel David Spieth was born on Nov. 14 and already has been traveling with the family to various tournaments.
“He’ll make an appearance tomorrow, assuming the weather holds up,” Spieth said. “First Masters should be a pretty fun day … that will be a memory that obviously we’ll always have.”

Spieth added: “It will put things in perspective. I remember watching Webb (Simpson) with his five or 10 kids, however many kids he has, out on the Par-3, and obviously mine’s not walking or running around or hitting any putts, but I think that will be a really cool day tomorrow.”
A Masters tradition like none other returns this Wednesday beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
