The best (and worst) merchandise at the Players Championship 2024

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — It’s not often I go into a merchandise shop these days and see an item I’ve never seen before, let alone one that makes me chuckle. But The Gold Man chain is next level.

It’s a takeoff of the over-played University of Miami turnover chain, a golden piece of bling worn by the defender who made an interception or recovered a fumble, which debuted in 2017 and has had many copycats.

Now it can be yours — for $38 —for your foursome and all sorts of fun. I’m thinking you make a sand save, you get the chain; drain a putt of more than 30 feet, you get the chain. The possibilities are endless. As novelty items go at golf tournaments, I guess it’s different but the merch shop may have officially jumped the shark.

Otherwise, it’s pretty standard fare this week, albeit with a wide array of selections from just about every brand you can think of — Peter Millar, Adidas, Nike, Puma, Under Armour, johnnie-O, Malbon, Tasc, Garb, Ahead, Pukka, Imperial, Smith & Quinn, Lily Pulitzer and even Barstool Sports.

The Players continue to up its t-shirt game while bringing back some standbys such as the 904 area code shirt that seemingly every tournament sells. And there’s a 50th-anniversary logo that is a nice addition this year.

Here’s a look at some of the gear on sale this week at the Players.
