Record round, impressive hole outs and stars stumbling highlight third-round action at 2024 PGA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The third round of a golf tournament is known as Moving Day for a reason, folks.

The 78 players who made the weekend cut at the 2024 PGA Championship took the reference to heart as 54 players were under par on Saturday at Valhalla Golf Club, including 14 who shot 4-under 67 or better. Nobody was better than Shane Lowry, who tied the record for low round at a major championship with his bogey-free 9-under 62 in the third round to match the previous efforts of Xander Schauffele (first round, 2024 PGA; first round, 2023 U.S. Open), Rickie Fowler (first round, 2023 U.S. Open) and Branden Grace (third round, 2017 Open).

Lowry vaulted 25 spots up the leaderboard and will enter Sunday’s final round at 13 under, T-4 alongside Viktor Hovland (66) and Bryson DeChambeau (67), and two shots behind Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, the 54-hole leaders at 15 under. The other big mover of the day was Lowry’s Ryder Cup teammate, Justin Rose, who fired a 7-under 64 to rise 16 places into a tie for seventh alongside another European Ryder Cupper, Robert MacIntyre.

From a nearly historic scoring day to Scottie Scheffler’s struggles and some must-see shots, check out the highlights from the third round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla.
