ATLANTA – And then there was one.

One round, 18 holes on Sunday will determine who wins the Tour Championship, the season-long FedEx Cup and a first-place prize of $25 million in bonus money.

Scottie Scheffler is in the pole position, just as he has been almost the entire season. The Texan is trying to win his seventh PGA Tour title this year and the FedEx Cup for the first time. It would cap off one of the most remarkable seasons on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods in his prime. Scheffler posted 5-under 66 at East Lake Golf Club on Saturday to improve to 26 under and extend his lead to five shots over Collin Morikawa.

But it was just two years ago that Scheffler owned a six-stroke lead heading into the final round and Rory McIlroy shot 64 to erase the deficit and claim the title. As Yogi Berra would say, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over.

Here are five things to know about the third round of the Tour Championship.

Collin Morikawa is Scheffler’s closest chaser at 21 under, with Sahith Theegala alone in third at 17 under, nine back.

The newly-renovated East Lake Golf Club is a par-71 track measuring 7,490 yards.

Mizuno irons 2024: Which is right for your game?

With the release of the Mizuno ST-Max 230 driver this spring, along with the ST-Z 230, ST-X 230, and ST-X PLTNM 230 drivers last season, the Japanese equipment maker has shown it is serious about making technologically advanced woods that can blend distance, forgiveness and classic looks. However, when most golfers think about Mizuno, they still think about irons and, more specifically, muscleback blades that look like they should be hanging in an art museum.

Mizuno understands this and does not shy away from its reputation as a maker of great irons, but it offers more than just clubs for the game’s best players. Between the Mizuno Pro and JPX families, which are updated in alternating seasons, the company also makes better-player distance irons and game-improvement clubs.

The best advice on which irons are suitable for you will come from a custom fitter who has access to a launch monitor. The list of irons below can provide you with information about each of Mizuno’s current offerings and act as a starting point to help you discover which iron might be ideal for your needs and your game.

ATLANTA – Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns are best buddies. They are road roommates, practice-round partners and enjoy bible study together on the PGA Tour. On Friday, Burns predicted Scheffler would go hole hunting with his second shot from a fairway bunker at No. 13 at East Lake Golf Club. When Scheffler hit a rare poor shot, a one-handed finish that found a plugged lie in the sand, Burns, speaking with Kevin Kisner and Smiley Kaufman on NBC cracked, “This guy is terrible.”

So terrible that he made just his second bogey of the week at that hole and posted a 5-under 66 to improve to 21 under after two rounds at the Tour Championship.

But after he finished his round, Burns was more realistic. “I need to make a lot of birdies. He’s the best golfer on the planet. He’s really good with leads. It’s not a great thing for us,” he said.

Asked if he thought there was a chance Scheffler might back up over the weekend, Burns didn’t hesitate.

“I am not expecting him to come back in the slightest,” he said. “Somebody is going to have to go chase him down. I think if you drive the ball well around here, get yourself in position enough and you have a good day with the irons and make some putts, I think a low score is to be had.”

During Friday’s second round, which included a late-afternoon weather delay of one hour and 33 minutes, Collin Morikawa did just that, posting 63 to cut Scheffler’s lead from seven after the first round down to four and Xander Schauffele is lurking five back.

Cancel the coronation for Sunday? Not yet. But after 36 holes, we’re saying there’s a chance it won’t be a blow out.

Here are five things to know after the second round of the 30-man Tour Championship, the FedEx Cup finale, where $100 million in bonus money will be doled out and the winner will bank a cool $25 million.

The first 36 holes of the 2024 Tour Championship in Atlanta are in the books and the man who entered with a two-shot lead now has a four-shot advantage heading into Moving Day.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has posted rounds of 65-66 and sits at 21 under, four clear of Collin Morikawa at 17 under, who has shot rounds of 66-63.

Xander Schauffele is five back of Scheffler at 16 under, while Sahith Theegala, Wyndham Clark and Adam Scott are nine back at 12 under. This sure looks like a three-man race.

Haeran Ryu opens huge lead at 2024 FM Championship at TPC Boston

The first-ever FM Championship is turning into a rout.

Haeran Ryu shot a 10-under 62 on Friday at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, and is the lone golfer at double digits under par through two days. She’s at 13 under and had a six-shot lead over three golfers: Bianca Pagdanganan, Robyn Choi and Yealimi Noh.

Jin Young Ko and Lauren Coughlin are tied for fifth at 6 under.

Marina Alex, who led at the end of action at 4 under Thursday (the first round was suspended by weather with one group still on the course), shot a 72 after posting a 68. She’s now tied for ninth.

Ryu, the 2023 Louise Suggs Rookie of the Year, is seeking her second LPGA win. Her Friday 62 is the best round of the week by four shots.

The cut came in at 2 over. Among those who missed the cut were Albane Valenzuela (3 over), Gemma Dryburgh (3 over), Celine Boutier (4 over), Alison Lee (4 over) and Yuka Saso (4 over).

Pennsylvania veterans group cancels charity golf event after 'unspecified threat'

Pennsylvania veterans group cancels charity golf event after 'unspecified threat'

On Friday, Penn National Golf Club near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was expected to be the site of the eighth annual Franklin County Veterans Affairs Golf Tournament, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-70s for a perfect end-of-summer round.

But event organizers canceled it on Thursday, citing a threat made toward those planning to take part.

According to a Facebook post from the organization:

The Franklin County Commissioners and Penn National Golf Club & Inn have made the difficult decision to cancel the 8th Annual Franklin County Veterans Affairs Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 30. The decision was made after an unknown individual made an unspecified threat directed at tournament participants earlier this week.

“The safety of everyone – our staff, our volunteers, our participants and the residents of Penn National – is our utmost priority,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “This tournament has always been about honoring and supporting our veterans and we are disappointed that the cowardly actions of one individual have ruined this year’s event.”

Since the event was completely sold out, organizers had scheduled morning and afternoon tee times at the course for the first time in the event’s history and this year had added a $50,000 hole-in-one contest.

Although those who signed up are eligible for a refund, organizers hoped to still recoup some of the funds.

All proceeds from the golf tournament benefit the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Outreach Fund, which supports a variety of programs and services for Franklin County’s 13,000-plus veterans. Event sponsors and participants are eligible to receive a refund, if they so choose, by contacting the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Office at 717-263-4326 or [email protected]. Otherwise, contributions to this year’s event will benefit the outreach fund as originally intended.

The PGA Tour’s 2024 FedEx Cup Playoff finale is off and running and so is Scottie Scheffler.

The world No. 1 has opened a seven-shot lead at the revamped par-71, 7,490 yard East Lake Golf Club. Scheffler shot a first-round 65 and after starting at 10 under, thanks to the PGA Tour’s staggered strokes format, he’s become the first golfer on record (since 1983) to hold a seven-shot lead or more after 18 holes.

Scheffler is sitting at 16 under. His first-round playing partner, Xander Schauffele shot 70, and he’s tied for second with Collin Morikawa, shot 66, at 9 under.

The second-round tee times are not based on one’s position on the leaderboard but rather first-round scores, so Morikawa’s 66 puts him in the final group with Scheffler.

Adam Scott also shot 66, as did Taylor Pendrith, Aaron Rai and Justin Thomas.

Scottie Scheffler's opening-round lead, early reviews for East Lake among 5 things to know at 2024 Tour Championship

Scottie Scheffler's opening-round lead, early reviews for East Lake among 5 things to know at 2024 Tour Championship

Scottie Scheffler’s two-stroke lead in the staggered start at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta evaporated after just one hole with a bogey and a birdie by closest competitor Xander Schauffele. Would it be the start of a memorable clash between the two best players of the year?

It’s too soon to say but Scheffler is attempting to suck all the drama out of the FedEx Cup trophy chase, shooting 6-under 65 on Thursday to open up a seven-stroke lead after the first round. Given that he’s won six times this season, it was surprising to learn that it is Scheffler’s first lead after the first round since the 2022 Tour Championship.

Here are five more things to know after Thursday’s action.
